Putting Your RV Away for Winter? A House Battery Storage Checklist

The last camping trip is only the start of winter preparation. Your RV’s house battery can still be supplying small loads when the lights appear to be off. A clear storage plan helps you avoid discovering an exhausted bank when spring arrives.

The last camping trip is only the start of winter preparation. Your RV’s house battery can still be supplying small loads when the lights appear to be off. A clear storage plan helps you avoid discovering an exhausted bank when spring arrives.

Identify what you have

Write down each battery’s model, voltage and chemistry, along with the bank arrangement. A motorhome may also have a separate starting battery. Label your notes clearly so a storage instruction for the house bank is not accidentally applied to the chassis battery.

Check the manufacturer’s storage instructions

Lead-acid and lithium batteries do not share one universal storage routine. Follow the exact product guidance for initial charge, storage temperature, disconnecting and inspection intervals. Do not assume an RV converter or solar controller is suitable for indefinite unattended maintenance.

Find the loads that stay connected

Ask which devices remain powered after the master disconnect is off. Alarms, trackers and other equipment may have separate feeds. If the RV still needs powered safety systems, arrange an approved supply and monitoring plan. Do not simply remove power from equipment that must remain operational.

Inspect before putting the RV away

Look for damaged cases, corrosion, loose restraints and compromised cables. Have faults corrected before charging or storage. Keep the battery compartment dry and properly ventilated as designed. Never open a sealed battery to add water; serviceable flooded batteries have their own maintenance instructions.

Leave yourself a spring checklist

Record the storage date, charger model and the manufacturer’s next inspection date. Save photographs of the labels and professionally documented connections. When you return, inspect and assess the bank before relying on it for a trip. If replacement is needed, compare the complete bank requirements rather than replacing one unit solely because it looks oldest.
